  The Promise (Cowboy Song)
Words and Music by F. Gonzales, T. Gonzales

Well twenty years ago, there was a girl that I knew
She was seventeen and just out of school
She met a young boy and thought he was cool
But they fell in love much too soon.
As the years went by and the romance died,
Her hopes and dreams began to shatter,
And though her love was strong, she wondered what went wrong
Because to him, she just didn’t matter.

So, on her bended knees she made a promise to herself
that if she fell in love again-

He’d have to be rich and be a cowboy,
When she met him she’d know right from the start
He’d have to have money and drive a pickup truck
‘cus that’s the only way he’d win her heart.

It’s another Saturday night and she’s looking just right,
But it’s just another night at the bar,
Then in walks a guy, who catches her eye
and she thinks he’s the one she looking for.
Now they’ve talked all night long ‘til the night has gone
But about him she’s still not sure she knows
Then she knows he’s sincere as he pulls her near and tells her he’ll never let her go.

But, on her bended knees she made a promise to herself
that if she fell in love again-

He’d have to be rich and be a cowboy,
When she met him she’d know right from the start
He’d have to have money and drive a pickup truck
‘cus that’s the only way he’d win her heart.
But, on her bended knees she made a promise to herself
that if she fell in love again

Yes, the girl is me, and now I can see that a promise, one can’t always keep
Because the boy he ain’t rich and he plays rock –n- roll
But he sure found a way into my soul
Now time has past I found true love at last, forever happy I know I’m gonna be
With his love in my life, everything is just right
I’m as rich as I ever want to be.

As I remember the promise that I made to myself,
I guess true love wins in the end

‘cus he’s not rich, he’s not a cowboy well I guess I knew that from start
he ain’t got money, he plays rock – n- roll and he sure found a way into my soul.
‘cus he’s not rich, he’s not a cowboy well I guess, I knew that from start
he ain’t got money, he plays rock – n- roll but he sure found a way into my heart.
