Cal took a liking to all styles of music at an early age due to his father playing saxophone with various bands around town including the likes of PeteFountain and Al Hirt. His Mom always had the AM radio on playing all the hits. He first took trumpet lessons around age 6 or 7 yrs old for a while. Then tried at different times playing Piano, Guitar, Bass Guitar, etc…until he got to sit behind a drum kit at one of his dad’s friends house. That was it, He was hooked and any time after that he would play any chance he got. His first set was actually a friends used set. He’d listen to songs and learned to play. He took Chorus and school band for only a short time during high school. Got married, raising children, not playing but staying in touch by going out to see bands…..Then after about 12 years decided to go get a new set and start playing again. Bought a 5 piece Pearl set and starting playing with his brother Craig, Jason Howard, Tommy Delatte, Ed Gaudet and Ferd Gonzales. They played on weekends at the house and had people come over and jam. Through that experience he networked and joined the classic rock band called Outcast. Then joined the original, Local Option Band for a few years, then left and joined Blind Ambition. After they disbanded he started joining/sitting in with various bands such as Don Barry & King Soul, Lucky Dog,2 Faced-Kitty, and Heart-2-Heart playing with Ferd and Tracey until taking a break in 2004-07 to welcome and help raise his daughter Emily. During that time he was diagnosed with Reumatoid Arthritis and thought he’d never be able to play again. After getting it under control with therapy and the right medication he starting playing again with Kenny-L and Friends, Garlic Truck, and Night Hawk. Then recently got a call from Ferd and Desire Street who were looking for a drummer. Since that time, he has joined the band and (in his words) I'm playing with a great group of guys (and Tracey). With a little luck and God willing I’ll be playing for many years to come. He currently lives in the New Orleans area, married, and have three children, three stepchildren and a total of 10 grandchildren. | |||||
